The Play

“The Curious Savage,” is the warm-hearted tale of Mrs. Ethel Savage, a slightly eccentric, extremely wealthy widow. Being the recipient of her deceased husband’s estate, she wants to make the best use of it, despite her greedy stepchildren’s selfish attempts to get their hands on it. Mrs. Savage, however, has put her wealth into negotiable bonds in the hopes of establishing a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams, much to the siblings’ chagrin. They then commit her to a “sanitorium” in the hopes of shocking her to her senses. There she meets a variety of social misfits, all needing exactly the kind of help Mrs. Savage can provide and who eventually appear more sane that those outside the walls of the institution. These wonderful individuals immediately endear themselves to Mrs. Savage. With the help of her new-found friends, Mrs. Savage leads her stepchildren on a merry chase! A lovely story about what it means to be a family.

Note From the Director...

I would like to welcome you to tonight’s performance of “The Curious Savage.”  This is my first directing experience and I couldn’t be more grateful to this group for making it such a joy.  This show is more than a simple comedy, it is about family.  As Mrs. Savage struggles to find acceptance from her children, she instead finds it in the most unlikely place, a sanitarium.  The residents of the 'Cloisters' show Mrs. Savage that a family can be more than the people you are related to; that a true family is formed through love, kindness, and loyalty to one another.

I would like to thank my mother, Laurie, for all her help; my father, Chuck, for assisting with set building and putting up with everything; the cast for being there through all our ups and downs; and, of course, everyone else that has made this production possible.

Enjoy the show!

-Kathryn Heller,
Co-Director
