Letter to the Troops:

To all CS troops arriving at Pipestone Minnesota in August 2008:

I appreciate all your efforts on your plans to attend the Pipestone Civil War Days this year. There are a few things you should know that make this event unique. The price of gasoline has had an affect on attendance at events this year, but the sponsors have done a very good job of making the pain at the pump a bit less. If you are PREREGISTERED the $5.00 registration fee has been waived. In addition if you are PREREGISTERED you will receive a $5.00 certificate per person good for shopping, food, or fuel at many businesses in the community. Sharing a vehicle with others could turn into a $15-$20 bounty per car.

There is no meal being provided on Saturday evening. In 2006 over 100 no-shows for prepaid meals. No one will grow hungry in the CS camp. I have already made arrangements to ensure that there is old stale campbread and rancid meat around.....

I will be on site by 8:00 am on Friday to help direct camp placements,  work at the site and greet everyone. Command will be inspecting arms, ammo pouches and watching drill to ensure everyone’s safety.

It appears that numbers will again be good. We are looking for between 75 and 100 troops. The Missouri Battalion has indicated that their attendance will be higher than 2006.  There will be new participants this year as word of the event continues to spread.

There may be a need for some consolidation, so please understand that we will be fighting as an Infantry Battalion rather than as independent commands or small groups. Gentlemen if you are officers but are only bringing a couple people please bring your enlisted gear also. Smaller groups will be brought under the command of larger units. Drilling will be important so everyone knows how the unit will operate together.

Major Hoskins and I have discussed how to increase civilian roles at the event.  We believe this could be a unique experience and will keep you abreast of any developments.

There will be a brief officers meeting at 2100 Friday evening. Please have a member of your unit present if your officers are not available.

On to Washington!

David Renli, Major, Commanding at Pipestone 08
